The Histopathologic Study of Early Stage of Male pattern Alopecia

Abstract
The characteristic histopathologic findings of male pattern alopecia in the late stage have been reported to be increased percentage of telogen follicle, decreased count of terminal hairs, increased count of vellus hairs. However, there are no
accepted
characteristic histologic findings on early stage of male pattern alopecia.
We studied 10 male and 10 female patients who were diagnosed as male pattern alopecia to find out the histologic findings in early stage and also to compare the histologic findings in female with those in male patients.
Two skin plugs were obtained form vertex of each patient to examine with light-microscope. Formalin-fixed and frozen plugs were cut transversely or vertically and were stained with hematoxylineosin or toluidine blue.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1. Among the 20 cases, shrinkage of follicular epithelium was observed in 10 cases(M:6, F:4), perifollicular fibrosis in 17 cases(M:10, F:7), hyperkeratosis of epidermis in 11 cases(M:6, F:5) perivascular and periadnexal mononuclear cell
infiltrations in 16 cases(M:9, F:7) and melanophages in 15 cases(M:8, F:7).
2. Compared to the number of terminal hairs(average: 12.8/6.3mm*) and vellus hairs(averge: 0.2/6.3mm*) of the control group, the decrease in the number of terminal hairs or the increase in the number of vellus hairs in the early stage of male
pattern
alopecia patients were ont observed. The observed number of terminal hairs of alopecia patients were average 7.2/6.3mm* and vellus hairs were average 0.7/6.3mm*.
3. No noticable differences were observed between the histologic findings of male and female patients with male pattern alopecia.
In conclusion, in comparison with the early stage male pattern alopecia. And no noticable differences were observed between the histologic findings of male and female patients.
